George Takei: “Enterprise Was a Metaphor for Starship Earth”

George Takei: “Enterprise Was a Metaphor for Starship Earth”

WELCOME BACK! FOR THOSE OF YOU JUST JOINING
THE SHOW, JESSICA ALBA DID SOMETHING UNPRECEDENTED TO MY
HAIR, AND WE’RE GOING TO LEAVE IT THIS WAY FOR THE REST OF THE
SHOW. ( LAUGHTER )
MY NEXT GUEST TONIGHT IS A STAR OF STAGE AND SCREEN,
A HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVIST AND A SOCIAL MEDIA SUPERSTAR. BUT HE’LL ALWAYS BE SULU TO ME. PLEASE WELCOME GEORGE TAKEI. ( BAND PLAYING )
( CHEERS AND APPLAUSE ) COME ON OUT!>>FANTASTIC AUDIENCE.>>Stephen: AMAZING. WELCOME BACK TO BROADWAY.>>ALLEGIANCE WAS MY DEBUT.>>Stephen: YOU’VE DONE
BROADWAY, STAR TREK. BEFORE WE GET TO ANYTHING ELSE,
WHO HAS THE NERDIER FANS, BROADWAY OR STAR TREK IS THIS.>>I WOULD SAY THEY’RE BOTH
NERDY IN DIFFERENT WAYS. SCI-FI FANS ARE NERDY TECHIES,
AND BROADWAY FANS ARE STAR-ORIENTED, FROM GOING WAY
BACK, TO TODAY. THE BROADWAY FANS ARE
ACTOR-ORIENTED. SCI-FI FANS ARE TECHY ORIENTED.>>Stephen: OKAY. THEY WANT TO SEE THE SPECIAL
EFFECTS.>>THAT’S RIGHT.>>Stephen: OKAY. OME OF THE ACTORS ARE
SPECIAL EFFECTS, TOO.>>Stephen: WHILE I ENJOY
BROADWAY, I HAVE TO SAY THAT I AM SUCH A STAR TREK FAN, THAT TO
BE HERE,ETH SUCH A PLEASURE AND HONOR FOR ME TO BE HERE WITH
YOU, WHOSE WORK I HAVE ENJOYED SINCE I WAS KNEE HIGH TO A
GRASSHOPPER, TO TALK ABOUT THE 50th ANNIVERSARY OF STAR TREK,
ONE OF THE GREATEST SHOWS EVER ON TELEVISION. A GROUNDBREAKING SHOW. SUCH A PLEASURE TO HAVE YOU HERE
( CHEERS AND APPLAUSE )>>FOR A GUY PUSHING 80, IT’S
WONDERFUL TO BE ABLE TO SAY, TODAY WE’RE 50! ( CHEERS AND APPLAUSE )
>>Stephen: SO WHAT WAS IT LIKE? IT WAS, LIKE, DAY ONE ON THE SET
WITH GENE ROANBURY, THE CREATOR, HOW WAS THE SHOW DESCRIBED TO
YOU?>>I CAN’T FORGET THAT DAY. IT WAS VERY SPECIAL. WE ALL MET FOR A COLD READ IN A
CONFERENCE ROOM, AND GENE RODENBURY AND THE EXECUTIVE HERB
SOLO WERE ALL SEATED UP FRONT. WE WERE ALL INTRODUCED AND GENE
EXPLAINED TO US WHAT STAR TREK WAS ALL ABOUT. HE SAID THE STARSHIP ENTERPRISE
WAS A METAPHOR FOR STARSHIP EARTH, AND THE STRENGTH OF THIS
STARSHIP LAY IN ITS DIVERSITY COMING TOGETHER. THE ACRONYM WAS INFINITE
DIVERSITY. WE WERE REPRESENTING DIFFERENT
PARTS OF THE PLANET, SEEING THE COMMON CHALLENGE WE HAVE,
CONFIDENT OF OUR PROBLEM-SOLVING CAPABILITIES, OUR GENIUS FOR
INVENTION, INNOVATION, WE WERE GOING TO BOLDLY GO WHERE NO ONE
HAD GONE BEFORE. ( CHEERS AND APPLAUSE )
>>Stephen: SO IF THE DIFFERENT CHARACTERS, THE CAST
AND THE GUESTS EVERY WEEK REPRESENTED THE DIVERSITY OF THE
EARTH AND HOW THEY CAN SOLVE PROBLEMS TOGETHER, WHAT DIVERSE
PART OF EARTH’S POPULATION DID THE SEXY, GREEN-SKINNED ALIEN
BABES IN THE BIKINIS REPRESENT?>>THEY WERE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE
EARTHLINGS, ALTHOUGH THEY HAD TWO LEGS, TWO ARMS, TWO BREASTS
AND, YOU KNOW, THEIR BODIES ARE GREEN, AND, SO, THEREFORE, THEY
WERE SUPPOSED TO BE ALIENS. BUT WE ALSO HAD, AS A MEMBER OF
THE STAR FLEET TEAM, A PERSON THAT WAS HALF ALIEN, SPOCK. HE HAD GREEN BLOOD, POINTY
EARS — OH, SPOCK FANS HERE.>>Stephen: OF COURSE, RIGHT. HIS MOTHER WAS AN EARTH WOMAN
AND HIS FATHER WAS A VULCAN.>>Stephen: SO IT WAS AN
INTERRACIAL MARRIAGE.>>INTERGALACTIC, INTERGLOBAL.>>Stephen: BUT STILL RACY FOR
THE 1960s.>>IT WAS. BUT VOL CANS MATE EVERY SEVEN
YEARS. SO THEY WEREN’T VERY SEXY FOR
SIX AND A HALF YEARS AND THEN THEY START RAGING.>>THEY GO INTO HEAT. DO.>>Stephen: IT’S TRUE. AMOC TIME! YOU HAVE TO GO SEE TAPAU.>>OH, YOU KNOW YOUR STUFF.>>Stephen: AT SOME POINT I
WOULD LOVE THE STUDIO TO COME UNDER ATTACK SO WE CAN SHAKE
BACK AND FORTH AND –>>OH, LIKE WE DID ON THE
ENTERPRISE.>>Stephen: EXACTLY. WHICH WAY WOULD YOU GO FIRST,
ALWAYS LEFT OR RIGHT FIRST?>>WELL, WE HAD A DIRECTOR OUT
THERE, AND HE WOULD SAY LEFT, AND WE WOULD GO LIKE THIS. YOUR RIGHT.>>Stephen: OKAY, LEFT. AND HE WOULD SAY RIGHT, AND
IN UNISON, WE WOULD GO LIKE THIS.>>Stephen: YOU DIRECT US. JIM, YOU PUT US ON A CAMERA. I’LL CRY RED ALERT AND YOU TELL
US WHICH WAY TO GO AND YOU SHAKE THE CAMERA, OKAY, JOHN? OKAY. WELL, GEORGE, LET ME ASK YOU
THIS — WHAT! RED ALERT! (SIREN)
>>LEFT, RIGHT! ! (SIREN)
( CHEERS AND APPLAUSE )>>WE HAVE A GREAT AUDIENCE.>>Stephen: I CAN’T WAIT TO GO
BACK IN TIME AND TELL MY CHILDHOOD SELF I GOT TO DO THAT
WITH YOU. ( LAUGHTER )
GEORGE TAKEI, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING HERE.>>GREAT TO BE HERE.>>Stephen: THANK YOU FOR YOUR
WHOLE CAREER AND STAR TREK! GEORGE TAKEI, EVERYBODY! WE’LL BE RIGHT BACK! ( CHEERS AND APPLAUSE )
( BAND PLAYING )

Love that someone as prominent as Colbert is such a huge geek.

Great interview, but I wouldn't be a good Trekki if I didn't point out that the Vulcan mating time is not called "Amok Time" but called "pon farr", Amok Time is the name of the episode that featured the pon farr.

  33. Purple Monkey says:

  34. Hostile Fork says:

I had gay next-door neighbors as a kid in Oklahoma City, before I knew what gay or straight was. And I thought they were odd a bit, doing their lawn without their shirts and wearing nipple rings. But a son of one of theirs–from a marriage prior–was who I came to be friends with. We played video games, and when they weren't home and not looking, we went and poked at their heated waterbed. Like "whoa, look at this crazy thing". Which goes to show you who the real creepy people are. Children breaking into your bedroom. When the gay people are just watering their lawn with nipple rings. More power to Takei and the Star Trek future where the truth is told.

  51. Beebo the mighty little bear says:

I friggen love this guy. His enthusiasm for life is contagious. He had a horrendous childhood and instead of feeling victimized and angry for the rest of his life, he embraced every moment and lived it up. I recommend checking out the documentary about him, it's very interesting. Aaaaand he even made watching Colbert bearable. That's a feat unto itself.

  52. ShadyShadok says:

Kirk punching that woman in the face was a metaphor for domestic abuse.

  64. Jim Mason says:

I love that George is shocked that Stephen is a trekkie. He's going on expecting to have to explain what Star Trek is all about and Stephen's busting out episode names and singing the (in)famous fight music…

  65. 72marshflower15 says:

**True Collectives are replete in diversity, not fixed to one individual ideological nature…

The impression of the Borg was a misnomer as the Borg only projected one individual ideological nature over the whole (regardless of the numbers involved) and was intolerant of those outside it's individual likeness… The True Collective was the Crew of the Enterprise, replete in diversity…

Ayn Rand was spot on backwards, but conservatism projects inversely, so it's expected…

Nice to see Gearge doing so well in his later years πŸ™‚ Good Man πŸ™‚

  66. Jayvee De Castro says:

I teared up a bit when Stephen said "will always be Sulu to me"

Pardon me, but a Vulcan-Human marriage would be intra-galactic, not intergalactic.

  69. Phyrexian Juggernaut says:

    what a beautiful man

  70. John Mastroligulano says:

I'm going to have to correct you the "green" person angle yes has to do with alien or ET this relates to OSIRIS who was also green & Separated by SET which SET means to Separate ET which is why they say Osiris was torn to pieces by SET, try to see names as program function with-in an AI reality & it'll help see that Neo green=what you are/this is(like Elon Musk said). It also relates to ORION who has his boot over the Rabbit/Hare/Lepus hole like why they use the Rabbit thing in Matrix symbolizing the bankers who are using Orion to enslave people, Orion the Hunter like Jeffrey Hunter & the scenario of The Cage & the first & last episode of StarTrek the Next Generation what it tells you about the lack of nature involved with reality(you may very well still be in the cage-zoo). Taurus have a thing with red which is why Rothschild name meaning is RED shield or why they use the red dress term in Matrix which is to say paying people to act as human shields. Watch the first & last episodes again notice the theme… Long story so I'll leave you with this esoteric spit up. OC~~~

  71. matzmx says:

What is it with ppl wearing trainers with suits…. Just put on some formal shoes!

I found George so annoying in Star Trek, i can't even watch it

  73. Jeff Cockmann says:

damn he still looks pretty good, that fucker must be like 80..

  74. Ben Wasserman says:

Takei's response to Trump/Pence: a very depressed "Ohhhhh my."

  75. D says:

george always has a smile on his face, seeing him like that is really uplifting

  76. EndingsAreHard says:

I love the fact that he's still so very much into it. A lot of actors who do a show or a movie with several sequels over years are often fed up with it and don't even want to talk about it.
I love that he's still so passionate about the ideas and message of the show. Not to mention he's funny and a great guy. πŸ™‚

  77. angela bluebird60 says:

I was a kid when Star Trek started…loved watching it and thought George Takei was so very handsome, still do.
Mr. Spock had it going on, too. πŸ™‚

  78. Erik Boesen says:

That description of the meaning of Star Trek makes me almost cry every time I see it.

  79. Ana Mahilom says:

STEPHEN COLBERT is the Nerd God! All hail!

  80. Yukimura Sanada says:

Why did Alba get 10 Minutes and George only got 6

  81. erghjkm vbnmlp says:

Let's make a movie about Imperial Japanese UNIT 731.

HONOR THE TENS OF THOUSANDS KILLED IN HIDEOUS CHEMICAL AND BIOLOGICAL "EXPERIMENTS".

    NEVER FORGET!

THE NAMELESS DEAD CRY OUT FROM THEIR GRAVES!

    F U C K G E O R G E T A K E I and every whiner on earth!

  82. [KYS] says:

Both are so full of themselves. Takei just needs to leave the public view. Colbert too.

  83. Steven Fritchie says:

And Starship Earth is now being attacked by the Klingons led by T'rump.

  84. Nan Barber says:

Stay Human did a great job with the theme.

  85. vwr32jeep says:

    Tekai goofball. Can’t stand him.

  86. Kenneth Humphrey says:

I'm glad that he is doing well. After watching several interviews of him and Shatner I realize that the issue between them is very simple. Shatner simply was the star of the show and everyone else was supporting actors. Shatner was more concern with his own career and not everyone else on the show. Shatner said he really didn't even know George Takei outside of Star Trek.

  87. The Learner says:

Takey you are awesome man!!! Thanks for all these years with us!

  88. Book of shadows contributor Brian says:

    Miss George now

  89. summerholliday44 says:

    mad love for George!!!!

  90. Chris Arseneault says:

I met George once. Then a while later, I remembered I wanted him to sign something. And he looked at me and said oh you're back yes I would love to sign that for you.

  91. Chris Arseneault says:

    Wonderful man

  92. Sam Martin says:

    Creepy rapist

  93. Joseph Nordenbrock says:

"To boldly go where no human primate (proven) has gone before." It just doesn't have a smooth flow to it. "No one" could be a bit confusing to the dumm'd down audience thinking we need a real body and a male captain. We can't have a hysterical woman in charge for good start up ratings. Woman can vote now so we'll need a very smart hot chick in the control room.

  94. Splendid Mendax says:

What a prissy disgusting asshole. Star of nothing. Angry little jealous freak. Stop attacking Shatner you butt miner.

  95. James James says:

It's such a shame that world lost greats like Nimoy and Kelley, before this disgusting, deranged, child molesting, shit-stabber.

Such is life though, I suppose.

  96. The Game Archiver says:

That Red Alert reenactment has hilarious.

  97. BillyWong says:

    George takei is a legend

  98. Kevin McDougall says:

George played Jeffrey "Captain Pike" Hunter's adoptive brother in the WWII drama "From Hell to Eternity" (not to be confused with "From Here to Eternity").

  99. Marc Ziegenhain says:

"He:ll always be Sulu to me." Same here, Stephen.
